A lista dos 500 Melhores Álbuns de Todos os Tempos da Rolling Stone foi originalmente publicada em 2003, com uma leve atualização em 2012. Ao longo dos anos, foi o artigo mais lido - e discutido - na história da revista (em 2019, foram mais de 63 milhões de views no site). Mas nenhuma lista é definitiva - os gostos mudam, novos gêneros surgem, a história da música é sempre reescrita. Então, decidimos refazer nossa lista de melhores discos do
zero.

Para isso, recebemos e tabulamos os top 50 discos de mais de 300 artistas, produtores, críticos e figuras da indústria musical (desde radialistas a donos de selos, como o CEO da Atlantic Recods, Craig Kallman).

O eleitorado incluiu Beyoncé, Taylor Swift e Billie Eilish; artistas em ascensão como H.E.R., Tierra Whack e Lindsay Jordan do Snail Mail; assim como veteranos da música como Adam Clayton e The Edge do U2, Raekwon do Wu-Tang Clan, Gene Simmons, e Stevie Nicks.

Como fizemos a lista e quem votou

Quando fizemos a RS 500 em 2003, as pessoas falavam sobre “a morte do disco.” O álbum - e, especialmente, o lançamento - é mais relevante que nunca (votos para discos greatest hits eram permitidos, principalmente porque uma compilação bem feita pode ser tão coerente e significante quanto um LP, e porque muitos artistas importantes gravaram o melhor trabalho deles antes que o disco chegasse como um formato majoritário).

É claro, ainda pode ser argumentado que embarcar em um projeto como este é ainda mais difícil em uma era de streaming e gostos fragmentados. Mas isso foi parte do que fez o reboot da RS 500 tão fascinante; 86 dos discos da lista são deste século, e 154 são novos - não estavam nem na versão de 2003 nem da de 2012. Os clássicos ainda são clássicos, mas o canon fica maior e melhor.
